An Aussie muscle car icon, the Charger was launched in August 1971 as a fastback coupe using a short wheelbase VH Valiant platform and proved an instant success. Buyers couldn't get enough of the sporty newcomer and sales of the Charger soon accounted for roughly fifty per cent of total Valiant production. Given the success enjoyed on the track by rivals Ford and GM-H, not to mention the massive publicity that went with it, Chrysler Australia wanted a piece of the action and with the Charger they now had the perfect vehicle for the likes of Leo Geoghegan to upset the establishment. A spin-off from the race programme, the Road/Track high performance package boosted the Charger's image with cosmetic enhancements like black stripes, the option of a blacked-out bonnet and a range of wild colours like Vitamin C, Hot Mustard and Hemi Orange. The grille was blacked out and featured quartz-halogen driving lights, while styled steel wheels were also unique to the R/T, along with full instrumentation and a two-spoke aluminium steering wheel. The R/T was available with three engines - a 265-cid six being the base level, with an E37 Street Six Pack or the homologation special E38 Six Pack optional. Of the 17,918 VH Chargers built, only 1,300 were the highly sought after R/T model and they have become one of the most collectible of all Aussie muscle cars in the recent boom. With the revival of the glory days of Aussie muscle car racing, a number of Chargers have appeared in Group NC racing and once more taken the fight to the Monaros, Falcon GTs and Toranas. For anyone looking to get started in historic racing, or for someone looking to move up to the sharp end of the grid, this well built and fully sorted Charger (with proven track record) is the ideal way to go.
