One of the more successful French manufacturers from the early days of motorcycle history was Rene Gillet, who built a prototype in 1900 with a single-cylinder engine tilted rearwards in the frame. The Model G was announced in 1922, with a twin-cylinder sidevalve engine in either 750cc or 1000cc form. The Rene Gillet was popular with the French army and police forces, often fitted with sidecars, and was favourably compared with Harley-Davidson for its rugged, powerful and rapid products. Post-war, the Rene Gillet continued building smaller two-stroke machines and was eventually absorbed by Peugeot in 1958.
