The GMC Sierra, and sister Chevrolet Silverado, can be traced back to 1975 when they were announced as trim lines on General Motor's full-size pick-up truck range and were sold in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive configuration. Marketed as the more upmarket version of the two, the Sierra was exceptionally well equipped - its luxurious cabin wouldn't look out of place in a limousine. The history of the full-sized GMC pick-up dates back to the introduction of the C/K models in 1962, followed by three successive generations prior to the all-new GMT400 platform being announced for the 1988 model year. Available in a range of body styles, including the extended dual cab found here, the buyer could choose from a variety of powerplants, ranging from a 4.3-litre V6 to the 7.4-litre V8 found in the vehicle offered here. The GMT400 platform was ultimately marketed in Australia by Holden as the Suburban, albeit with station wagon bodywork, and proved enormously successful in sales terms. The GMC Sierra was a big truck designed for a big country, perfectly at home on the wide, open roads of America or Australia and capable of transporting or towing huge loads.
