1968 Porsche 911S Coupe

It's hard to believe the 911 was launched more than four decades ago, but at the time of its arrival in 1963 the latest Porsche was hailed as a masterpiece and has become an enduring motoring legend. Retaining the rear-engined layout of its predecessor, the 356, the air-cooled, horizontally opposed engine now had six cylinders but the rest of the 911 was entirely new, with monocoque construction and timeless styling that has become one the most widely recognised sports car shapes ever created. In August 1967, Porsche expanded the 911 range to include three distinct models, the Touring, Luxe and Sport and the latter boasted a powerful 160bhp engine, upgraded suspension, ventilated front discs and stylish Fuchs alloy wheels. Inside, the 911 had 2+2 seating with split rear seats that could be folded down for additional luggage capacity and in 1968 Porsche introduced a semi-automatic transmission, dubbed the 'Sportomatic' and a precursor to the Tiptronic system used on Porsche's today. A driver's car first and foremost, the 911 had excellent acceleration, sharp handling and quick steering and enjoyed a wildly successful career both on the racetrack and in rallying around the world. Early short-wheelbase 911s have begun to show marked appreciation in recent years, particularly in desirable 'S' configuration, sought after for their purity of style and rarity when compared with modern 911s.
