In many ways the most significant new car from Rolls-Royce since the Silver Ghost was the Silver Shadow, launched in 1965 with a host of technical innovations including unitary construction, disc brakes all round and fully independent suspension. John Blatchley's styling was crisp and modern and the new Silver Shadow met with considerable acclaim. In keeping with Crewe tradition, there was a Bentley version as well, badged the T-series and distinguished by the unique radiator shell and flying 'B' mascot. Mechanically, both cars employed an updated version of the V8 engine found in the Cloud/S-type series with a new light alloy cylinder head and an improved Hydramatic transmission with the gear selection on the steering column. Early (pre-1969) T-series cars have a lovely Sixties feel inside, with a simple, uncluttered dashboard and no centre console. The T-series was always much rarer than the equivalent Silver Shadow - with 1,712 made in the period 1965 to 1976 it was outsold by the Rolls-Royce by around ten to one. This has made the subtler, more discreet Bentley more desirable today and the market for good examples remains strong.
