The LH Torana was significant car for Holden for a number of reasons. It was the first Australian designed and built mid-sized sedan and continued as The General's frontline racer in the fight for dominance in the Australian Touring Car Championship. Well received when launched in March 1974 by critics and the Australian public alike, the new Torana was announced with an extensive range of engine, transmission and trim options and at the top of the tree was a new high performance derivative (intended to replace the old XU-1) known as the SL/R, which stood for Sport Luxury/Racing. Although the SL/R came with the 3.3-litre 'six' as standard, buyers looking for more grunt could specify either one of the V8s (253-cid or 308-cid) lifted from the HQ Monaro and both came with a four-speed manual transmission as standard. The SL/R package consisted of blacked-out grille, rear panel, rocker panels and door window trims (the SL/R 5000 also had front and rear spoilers), front disc brakes as standard, anti-roll bars front and rear and a better equipped interior. The SL/R package provided the basis for the fearsome L34 homologation specials that dominated racing in the mid-1970s with the likes of Peter Brock and Colin Bond at the wheel.
