The Bel-Air (also known as the 2400) became a stand-alone series for Chevrolet in 1953, being the deluxe model of the range (sitting above the mid-level 2100 and entry1500-series) and bringing such niceties as auto transmission, radio and heater as standard equipment. The Bel-Air package could be had across four Chevy body styles, from Sport Coupe through two and four-door sedans to the Convertible.1954 saw a couple of minor updates including more powerful engines and a change to the front grille treatment. Bel-Air remained the top dog, the lesser trims dropping the last zero to become the '210' and '150'.For Bel-Air, the standard fit motor was the 235ci'Blue Flame' six, which ran with 115bhp behind a manual transmission or 125bhp with the Powerglide two-speed automatic. Though they may live in the shadow of the 1955-57 Chevys, the 1954 model, particularly in Sport Coupe and Convertible forms, are revered today for their style, which mixes the elegance of the Forties with the muscularity of the Fifties. It was also a showroom success, ensuring Chevrolet remained ahead of Ford in the war for sales.
