Reviving the tradition of the Jeep, the Hummer is the road-going version of the Humvee, the acronym coined to describe the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle that entered the public consciousness as Operation Desert Storm played out in the Gulf during 1991. Built by AM General Corporation at their South Bend, Indiana plant, the civilian Hummer was offered for sale in America from 1994, with action star and future Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger one of the vehicle's biggest fans. With a huge track and enormous ground clearance thanks to the major driveline components being raised (hence the large tunnel located between the seats), the Hummer has incredible off-road ability. A range of body styles was made, with the three most common being the station wagon, four-door pick-up and soft-top. The H1 was normally powered by either a diesel or petrol V8 engine with automatic transmission and had lots of useful off-road features, including the ability for the driver to lower or raise tyre pressures. With an overall length of 4.7 metres and at just under 2.2 metres wide, the Hummer has road presence like no other vehicle and unsurprisingly have proven popular as promotional vehicles around the world. In 1998, AM General sold the Hummer brand to General Motors but continued producing the H1 (as the original model was retrospectively tagged) until 2006, alongside the more luxurious H2. The smaller H3 is now sold through Holden dealers in Australia but the H1 will always be the granddaddy of them all, beloved by soldiers and celebrities alike.
