Description
The WL was the 45-cid Flathead V-twin and the WLD a special Solo Sport version of the same, featuring extra high compression, while the WLDD was designed as a semi-race bike in 1939 with aluminium heads, one that could be stripped down for track use. Changes for the 1939 model range included a newly streamlined dash with "cat-eye" indicator lights and ?boat-tail? tail lenses, along with stainless steel tips on the fenders and Russet rhino-grain leather saddles. Mechanical improvements consisted of new fuel filters, a larger oil cup on the front brake cable and drain plug on the carbie bowl. In total just 273 WLDD Harley-Davidsons were made in 1939, proving very successful on the track but understandably few have survived the passage of time.
