The LTD had, by the early 1980s, established itself as Ford Australia's flagship luxury sedan and was the best-equipped Australian car money could buy at the time. Both the slightly less expensive Fairlane and LTD were built on the longer wheelbase of the XD Falcon station wagon to provide rear seat passengers with generous legroom and each had unique front and rear styling. The LTD had louvred rear windows, rear headrests, lots of electric toys and the option of leather trim. As the XD Falcon evolved into the XE and finally, the XF, the LTD was similarly improved. For 1985 the FE-series LTD benefited from the same electronic fuel injection and ignition upgrades, along with a new electronic instrument panel, better ventilation and air conditioning system.
