Some of Australia’s rarest and most valuable number plates will be on offer to collectors and investors, in a new auction initiative at Motorclassica at the Royal Exhibition Building on Saturday evening 13 October.

Shannons Auctions present the ‘Rare Heritage Number Plate Auction’, the first-ever number plate auction to be held at Motorclassica that will see a selection of more than 30 Victorian heritage number plates up for grabs.

Several rare and ultra-valuable three-digit plates will be auctioned, along with four, five and six-digit collector plates.

“Number plates have become a genuine currency over the past 10 years, and the earliest plates are now regularly fetching well into six figures,” Motorclassica Event Director Paul Mathers said.

“In many, many cases, the number plates are worth considerably more than even the collector car they are fitted to, they have certainly proved a very good investment over the past decade.

“Depending on its collectability, these plates can go for anywhere from $10,000 each to $500,000 or more.”

Among the most sought-after plates to cross the auction block at Motorclassica will be the iconic ‘911’, expected to be highly prized by both Porsche enthusiasts and collectors.

In the one family ownership for 35 years, the ‘911’ plate is being offered for the first time during that period.

Other notable number plates up for auction include ‘464’ ‘747’, ‘906’, ’88.999’, ‘8.765’, ‘2.277’ and ‘3.142’, which is expected to generate a lot of interest as it’s the well-known Toorak postcode.

All five and six digital number plates are being sold No Reserve.

The ‘Rare Heritage Number Plate Auction’ will be conducted by Shannons Auctions, under the auspices of auctioneer Ross Johnston and Christophe Boribon.

“Changing things up a gear as ever, we thought that for Motorclassica this year conducting an exclusive number plate auction was a good way of refreshing our event, which is now in its ninth year,” Paul Mathers said

Headlining Motorclassica’s busiest day, the number plate auction will be ideal for ‘Motorclassica After 5’ event attendees, who will receive a discounted entry and a free glass of champagne upon arrival.

The ‘Rare Heritage Number Plate Auction’ will begin at 7pm.

Motorclassica is Australia’s premier automotive exhibition, annually bringing together the greatest collection of classic and collectible cars and motorcycles in the southern hemisphere, mixed with the very latest in performance cars from the world’s premium manufacturers.

Special exhibitions this year will pay tribute to 90 years of the Australian Grand Prix with a display of significant racers from the event and the attendance of 1980 World Champion Alan Jones.

There will also be a display of cars and motorcycles from the outrageous Art Deco era, from 1910 to 1940, and a celebration of 70 years of both the legendary Harley-Davidson Panhead and 60 years of the Triumph Bonneville.

Providing stark contrast to one another, Motorclassica will pay tribute to American muscle cars of the late ‘60s and also the tiny, quirky Micro Cars, plus there will be an exhibition of significant Cadillac models too.

More than 135 cars will compete in the multi-class Australian International Concours de’Elegance inside, while outside there will be themed car club displays in the adjacent Club Sandwich presented by Lorbek Luxury Cars.

Like the number plate auction, another initiative this year is the ‘Live Restoration Theatre’ which will see various stages of live restoration work being demonstrated throughout the show.

Throw in gourmet food trucks offering some of the finest meals on wheels, on-stage presentations throughout the three days and Motorclassica is set to be bigger and better than ever.

Motorclassica 2018 will be held at the Royal Exhibition Building from 12-14 October.
