Classics in Demand at Shannons Timed Online Spring Auction

Bidders were back in force for Shannons last auction for 2022. The Spring Timed Online Auction achieved a solid clearance rate of 89 per cent, with a total result of $12.9M.

The top-selling lot of the seven day online sale was the early NSW Heritage black and white number plate ‘92’, which sold for $1,215,500 after determined bidding.

1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Dietrich Convertible Victoria (LHD)

A magnificent and believed unique 1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Dietrich Convertible Victoria that formerly was owned by Robert Holmes à Court, but offered as part of the collection of the Late Fred Matatko, brought $330,500.

Meanwhile a collectible low km 1990 HSV VN Commodore Group A SS sedan (No 73) was the top local car at $266,000 after strong bidder interest, outselling an immaculate Monza Green 1971 Ford Falcon XY GT Manual ($232,000) and a low kilometre 1989 left hand drive Ferrari Testarossa Coupe that brought $216,000.

As expected, the 22 numeric number plates in the auction created a lot of bidder interest.

The four early Queensland plates were in heavy demand by collectors, with ‘Q360’ selling for $135,500, ‘Q921’ realising $101, 500 and ‘Q649’ selling for $90,000.

The highest price fore an early Victorian plate was the $501,500 paid for ’307’, while the best result for a three-digit NSW plate was $556,000 for ‘129’ and the ‘lucky’ NSW plate ‘8088’ went for $335,500.

Amongst the 38 classic motorcycles and scooters, a superb 1928 Indian 101 750cc Scout sold for an excellent $82,000, while a 1982 Ducati 900 SS was pursued by enthusiasts before selling for $37,000 and a 1956 Piaggio Ape ‘ACI’ 150cc three-wheeler sold for $16,525.

While the 1934 Packard Convertible Victoria from the collection of the late Fred Matatko brought $330,500, other early classics to deliver good results were a 1932 Cadillac Model 370-B V12 Limousine ($75,000), a right hand drive 1924 Packard Single Eight Model 136 Sports Tourer ($62,250) and a left hand drive Ford Model A convertible sedan ($36,200).

Classic Australian Muscle Cars continued to bring good strong auction results, with a 1977 Holden LX Torana sedan selling for $230,500; a 1990 HSV VN Commodore Group A SS sedan realising $126,000 and a 1975 HJ GTS 4.2 V8 ‘Manual’ Sedan bringing $70,000.

Replicas of popular classics also did well at the auction, with a replica 1988 Ford GT40 coupe bringing $186,000, a replica 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO replica sedan selling for $138,000; and a Vietnamese-built replica of a 1937 Type 11B Citroen Faux Cabriolet coupe realising $22,000.

Other Citroens in the Auction produced strong results. With a superb 1974 Citroen DS23 Pallas sedan sold for an auction record $77,000 and a 1961 Citroen ‘H’ commercial configured as a coffee van brought an unexpected $45,000.

Amongst the European exotics, the top seller was a 1997 Porsche 993 series Carrera S coupe at $303,000, while a 1985 Porsche Carrera 3.2 Coupe sold for $132,888; a 2004 Bentley Continental W12 coupe made $88,000 and a 1998 BMW M 3.2 Coupe sold for $74,500.

The top-selling Japanese sporting car was a 2002 Mazda RX7 Sprit R Coupe that brought $130,000, while amongst the small cars, the top sale was $45,388 for a 1959 Fiat Nuova 500 Normale Transformabile two-door sedan, ahead of a 1958 Messerschmitt KR200 Convertible ($43,000) and a 1964 Mini 850 sedan at $22,500.
