Hudson were one of the pioneers in lower cars without lost headroom with their 1948 'Step Down' range. Studebaker even managed to get their 1953 Coupes about 4 inches lower than their sedans, but I'm not sure if there was any compromise in headroom in them. Incidentally, the height of a '53 Stude Commander Starliner was 56.25 inches whereas a '57 Plymouth Fury was 2 inches lower..... Citroen got it right with their DS in 1955.
