Another miraculous escape occurred in the 1974 Bathurst 1000, the remains of which is shown below courtesy of Chevron Publishing. It happened on lap 146 in pouring rain, as described by Bill Tuckey in Australia's Greatest Motor Race: "Rod McRea, running fourth in the Dustings SLR (Torana), hit a huge pool of water in the dip just before the first hump on Conrod. He was doing just over 225km/h (140mph). It flew possibly 50 metres, rolling in the air, and impacted underbody-first about five metres up a tree. The car was bent like a banana, but McRea's only injuries were some bruising and some cuts where his crash helmet (which slid off his head) had almost ripped off his ears."
