I found a couple of pics of Mercedes being assembled by AMI in 1960; one very similar to yours MarkO, and a Ponton 190 body undergoing construction. In 1959, AMI also toyed with idea through their Mercedes link of importing or assembling DKWs and Auto Unions. They imported six for evaluation - an Auto Union 1000 Coupe, the rest being DKW Sonderklasse coupes, sedans and a wagon. They were all 3 cylinder 2-Strokes, and this may well have been against them. If they had been imported six years before, they might have given VW a run for their money.
