Seriously testing the old memory banks, David! It may not have been the first Japanese car in our street, but my clearest memory of new Japanese car ownership was our next door neighbour's daughter buying a KE20 Corolla two-door coupe in what must have been around 1970-71. It was super reliable and she owned it for many years. By the way, my uncle who lived in Bega, NSW was an early adopter of Japanese cars in the 1960s. He owned several Crowns, as he kept trading-up as each new model was released. I can remember riding in his third-gen S50 as a kid and being super impressed with its smooth ride, near-silent operation and (I think) electric over-drive controlled by a dashboard switch. Talk about high-tech!
