70Hornet, the sprint car event you write about was held on 12th December, 1987 and was the Kinsers' first show for that season.Randy Kinser won after Steve was disqualified for supposedly causing Rush to crash. Rush was also disqualified for not being able to re-start. That's how a third place Randy came to be awarded the win! And he did the tough way, from start position 9. Like you, I was there. Rush went soooooo high. His car ripped out the overhead track lighting, support poles and wires and almost ended up over the safety fence. Rush had attempted an outside pass from behind just as Steve moved up track to pass a lapped car. It is all on film somewhere. The race had to be declared because repairs could not be made before the time curfew. Just why the officials disqualified Steve Kinser was the subject of a heated debate later on. Track announcer Steve Raymond asked officials if they'd like to explain their decisions to the crowd. They declined. Mind you, it was a good night for the Commodore Kinser Team. Randy set a new track record of 12.31 seconds for the quarter miler which caused great consternation among the locals, who were almost half a second slower, because the Kinsers were actually in the cars they'd race the year before and many of the locals were in brand new cars.Randy also won the trophy dash. In short, the Kinser team cleaned-up in a very forceful start to their tour. That season they had an 80% win rate, and that included heats and main events. Quite remarkable. From a sponsor's view point the brothers were a delight to work with on and off the track. Nothing was ever any bother for them. Great days! I've attached the cover of Dennis Newlyn's National Sprint Car Racing magazine from that era. The cover photo was taken at Liverpool on that night. In fact, Dennis may well have a photo of Rush in the air. I'll find out.
