Interesting photo freeway. Given the SCW article was published in 1962, the NSW-registered R series must have been fairly new in terms of racing activity given it was also launched that year. The J after the race number denotes the 'Appendix J' touring car rules of those times (1960-64) but I can't identify the driver. See below another historic editorial (click on it to see full-frame) showcasing the 'hot' Ern Abbott and Clem Smith R series Valiants at their peak in the early '60s. Check out Smith destroying his rear tyres at 70mph in second gear. These slant six warriors had serious muscle!
