My 1800 has appeared on radio. In the late 1980s, one of the new Brisbane FM radio stations FM105, had some sort of a character, an old cardigan-wearing uncle who used to go down to the bowls club in his Austin 1800 every day. Someone came up with the idea of describing him coming home via the Story Bridge. A crew set themselves up overlooking the bridge, told me to tune my radio to FM105 – “Sorry fellas, I’ve only got AM in here”….. Two-way radios solved that problem and I heard their description – “Here comes Uncle Charlie doddering his way onto the bridge – an absolute symphony of beige……”
