I do remember some pretty effective motor racing-driven advertising by Castrol for its new 'Friction Modified' oil. Castrol claimed that top Aussie touring car teams used the very same oil in their race cars that you could buy off the shelf for your road car etc (you know the blurb). And there were plenty of empty Castrol Friction Modified (CFM) containers to be found discarded in the pits at any race meeting, which looked identical to those found on the shelves at your local Repco store. So far so good. It was only when I started working for Peter Janson at the time that I realised that although the CFM containers looked the same, the stuff inside was completely different. The CFM I put in my car was almost like water in terms of its viscosity, whereas the CFM supplied to race teams was so thick it looked like molasses!
