Tatra only made a single attempt to export their cars to Australia, which was in 1952 with the Tatraplan. The Tatraplan was aimed at the foreign export market and probably two thirds of all production went overseas. Consequently they don't have much of a following in Czechoslovakia and parts are very hard to come by. In 1951, a single Tatraplan was exhibited at the Melbourne Motor Show and due to the response it received, around a dozen or twenty were shipped here the following year. They were sold through Skoda dealerships in Sydney and Melbourne. Sales were very slow as the cars were very expensive. The contemporary photo of the Tatraplan in your article was taken in Perth in the 1960s and actually belongs to a friend of mine, not Motorbase. Being expensive cars, most were saved rather than scrapped and I know of at least eight Australian delivered cars in storage, under restoration or in museums. My car lived its life in Melbourne, where it was restored in the 1980s before being purchased by the York Motor Museum in WA. It was exhibited there for around 30 years before being put up for sale in 2014. It was passed in at several auctions for lack of interest until I picked it up. It required some refurbishing to get it running again - engine retuning, carbs rebuilt, rebuilt brakes, rebuilt gearbox (very challenging as there are no spare parts for Tatraplan gearboxes) and then a respray. For a short while there were two running and licensed Tatras in Perth - mine and a 1974 Tatra T603. The T603 was a private import in the early 2000s but there were at least three ex-consular cars here in Australia. I did get to have a drive in the T603 to compare their handling and, although they're separated by 20 odd years, they handle very similarly. The gearbox is heavy and robust (Tatra does make trucks after all), but the steering is light and responsive, which is surprising in such a large car. Like the Corvair and other Tatras, these cars handle really well when used as they are designed. Unfortunately the T603 has now gone east.
