Many bangers actually started off in wrecking yards. I saw a British clip on U-Tube where a young bloke walked into a breakers yard (Brit terminology) to choose a car for banger racing. He picked a fairly solid Austin A60 Cambridge, and then turned it into an even more solid machine to do battle with Dagenham Zephyrs and Zodiacs, Humber Super Snipes, other BMC Farinas, Jags, Daimler Limos, Rover 3 Litres and even the odd American. Makes you weep, really....
