I was watching an add for Lexis last night. Do people actually buy those god awful ugly things, with all LED bling, & the dreadful grill shape? They must be trying to look like a modern racing car. I am from the era when aircraft had wings, & racing cars were streamlined, as they should be. The fact that even an F1 had less than 200 BHP probably had some effect on that. The wider wheels on the 66 Brabham cost it 10 MPH down conrod against the Cooper Climax of a few years earlier, despite almost 100 more BHP. In the pics, The 1962 Lotus 20 is the minimalist racing car, 860 lbs. of fun, it even used the drive shaft as the upper control arm. The 1966 BT23 F1 Brabham, somewhat wider wheels by then, but not a single thing on the car that it could do without. First at the 68 sprint championships,. [look at the crowd clustered around the car, which has just started it's run, a prize for who can identify the most of them], then climbing the mountain, the right hander after the cutting. Then the Ferrari GT B at the Surfers Paradise endurance race 1968. The worst handling car I ever raced, [Hillman Imp included], but probably the prettiest car that ever graced a race track. The aero today adds hugely to the cost & complication, & the complication is getting ridiculous. Jack Brabham won world championships, with a team of 4 men, including himself, going to meetings. Wouldn't it be interesting if a limit of 4 pit crew was required today. at least it would get rid of synthetic pit stops.
