Honestly, I would be far more impressed by F1's repeated claim to be at the leading edge of automotive technology, if it could develop aerodynamics with clean-skin cars that found new ways to manage air flow that REDUCED drag and therefore fuel consumption. Imagine if they came up with a new surface coating which made the body of a car move through the air with less resistance? Then you'd have something that could be transferred directly to road cars and provide us with better racing while they're at it. The current obsession with downforce has no relevance to the automotive industry. For example, look at the front wings on these things (see attached pic) with so many wing elements you lose count. What possible relevance do these ridiculous structures have to road cars?
