Like Opel, Studebaker named their line-up during the late '20s right through to 1937 in hierarchical fashion. Commander, President and in the middle Dictator. Mussolini might have been reasonably trendy, so Dictator gave a sense of authority and on the way to the top. Unfortunately, by 1937, many people thought that activities in Europe rather soured the name, so it was dropped. Here's a mouthful for 1936 - the Studebaker Dictator St. Regis Custom Brougham. Dodge went on and used the St Regis name in the 1980s. Dodge also used Diplomat, like Opel, and it was used by De Soto for their export markets in the '50s.
