I'm going to take the road less traveled with my top five. In no order of priority, first is the Lex Davidson, Stan Jones and Tony Gaze 48-215 that they ran in the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally. Then I'd add Ron Harrop's "Howler" drag car, a machine that brought him to everyone's attention. Then there's Queensland speedway ace, and multiple oval track sedan championship winner, Allan Butcher. His first red Monaro, seen here at Liverpool in about 1970, was another car that launched a racing career. Next, and we are staying with the ovals , is Ralph Ranger's 1974 Holden Monaro 350. This car was the subject of a feature story in Australian Muscle Car magazine (#37) and was state of the art for dirt and pavement speedway during the 1974-75 season. Ranger won consistently on the dirt at the Newcastle Motordrome and on the high banked tar of Liverpool Raceway. And finally, still on the ovals, it is every Torana that ever raced. During the 1970s the Torana was the mainstay of oval track sedan competition in Australia. The photo here shows a mid-70s event being flagged away in Newcastle. Of the 12 cars in shot,10 are Toranas. Great days.
