It took 40 years from 1906 until 1946 for Austin to produce their millionth car. The millionth was a Sixteen painted in matt cream, then signed by the whole workforce before being sealed in clear cellulose. It was retained by the company and is now with the British Motoring Heritage Centre. Not being able to repaint it, or even polish it because of all the signatures including Len Lord, boss of Austin seen here signing the bonnet, it has deteriorated somewhat over the years. I took this pic in 1996 and it was worse for wear even then.
