This discussion reminded me of an interview I did with Leo Geoghegan for Unique Cars magazine back in 2001. He said the Charger R/T E38's brakes - rather than its three-speed gearbox - was the car's main weakness at Bathurst: "It was no problem at Bathurst because apart from the start, you only ever used second and third. Even with the four-speed (in the later model E49) we only used third and fourth at Bathurst. The four-speed really helped me in the sprint races at other tracks because it gave me an extra ratio off the line. With the three-speed cars (as shown below), time after time I'd put it on pole for a sprint race and have three or four Holdens and Fords knock me off into the first corner, which was really frustrating!"
