A perfect example is the Vanden Plas Princess 4 Litre R. George Harriman, then in charge of BMC canvassed a few of the larger dealers as to their thoughts on putting a Rolls-Royce engine into the large Farina saloon. They all thought it sounded a good idea, so Harriman went ahead with no market research and agreed to produce 100 a week. Then he changed his mind and bumped it up to 200. When told Vanden Plan could only do 100, Harriman replied "BMC can do anything, old boy." Turned out to be a total disaster with hundreds of unsold cars lying around in the weather. BMC in the UK was certainly an engineering company in which the accounts and marketing departments took second place.
