Don't want to turn this into a Show'n Tell, but I still have almost full runs of the three major magazines from their first issue up to the 1980s. Australian Monthly Motor Manual started in April 1946, Wheels in May 1953 and Modern Motor in June 1954. Cars started in May 1954 and lasted till 1957, Motor Manual struggled up to March 1986, then to be rebranded as Car Australia which ran for a few more years. My long-suffering parents usually came good with the money to buy three magazines a month, but it made it a lot harder when Motor Manual went fortnightly. Living on a farm meant me having to chop wood and milk cows around the place to earn enough extra, but I reckon it was worth it. The early Motor Manuals were pretty rudimentary, but it was all we had in those days. That this country could support three or four motoring magazines during the '50s says a lot. They still have a great deal of information and are great reference material. And no, the first Motor Manual I bought was about 1953; I bought the back issues at swap meets and second hand book shops.
