Regarding the 100E Prefect/Anglia side valve engine, it retained the 1172 cc capacity, but it was in fact a brand new engine, which allowed the use of existing production machinery to be carried over. It had a new cylinder block, head, crankshaft and adjustable tappets. Funds were extremely tight after the considerable expense of introducing the original Zephyr and Consul. Full production of the 100E took until March 1954. Sir Terence Beckett, later Ford of Britain’s managing director said that they didn’t have the time, the knowledge or the expertise to do a complete new engine. As 59impala has pointed out, they were almost unburstable, as I found with the 1959 Anglia de Luxe I took around Europe, seen here in the ruins of Dresden surrounded by cars with similar performance. For a balanced look at the industry in the UK at the time, I can recommend Russell Hayes’ 2012 book ‘Ford Cortina The Complete History’. This looks closely at BMC and the early days of the Morris 1100. The two early 1990s Complete Catalogues of Ford and Austin have most of the production figures, Martin Rawbone’s 2001 ‘Ford in Britain’ and David Burgess-Wise’s 2001 ‘Ford at Dagenham – The Rise and Fall of Detroit in Europe’ make fascinating reading.
