Like Hasbeen, the first car I owned with my brother was a 1929 Essex with wooden wheels. However the worst thing about them was that fearsome device, the split rim which you removed from around the spoke area. Split from side to side, you had to wrestle with it to get the tyre off and then back on, which took a real toll on tools, fingers, temper and fraternal relationships. We didn't know very much as teenagers as there may have been an easier way. Equipped also with that paragon of unreliability, a magneto, we both declared we would never own cars again with split rims or magnetos. We've been true to our word ever since. The Essex is in my garage of previous cars owned.
