It was Britain's first hatchback, it had a brand-new OHC engine and also had a 5 speed gearbox, something which Ford didn't have. Having driven both these and Cortinas when new, I know what I would rather drive in all conditions - the Maxi was far ahead in dynamics such as ride, road-handling and steering. I know all its shortcomings (and there were many) but it has been compared favourably with the car that inspired it, the Renault 16.
