Ford of England tried their hand at making Zephyr pickups. The Mark 1 Zephyr looked good to our eyes, but Dagenham weren't happy about building utes on a monocoque shell, so vetoed the idea. They tried again with the Mark II, and actually made a handful. What's immediately apparent is the lack of a strengthening ridge around the top of the tray, which Australian manufacturers all used to tie down tarps and tighten tall loads and so on. Meanwhile, there were three basic Zephyr utes made from 1957 onwards - the original grille, the revised grille and then the addition of stainless steel finisher around the windscreen along with a revised dash. These were the same modifications as the sdean. The roof of the last sedan was lowered - this didn't happen with the utes. The rear window of the ute came from the Mark 1 sedan, and the tail-lights from the Mark II Consul sedan. The 1960 ute here was my brother's; he traded in a 1950 Chev sedan for this very used ute, which in turn was traded for the first AP6 Valiant ute in the district.
