These days no car company would be able to afford to develop two very different cars aimed at the same market in Europe, or globally. I find also it interesting that the Taunus had been overlooked as a pioneer of the FWD family-sized car compared to the Morris 1100. Not being available beyond Germany has much to do with that combined with the Cortina's global presence and international racing/rallying successes.
