Weren't these the cars that set numerous speed records in different classes for different engine sizes by blanking off some of the cylinders ?
I think this was done during pre-war speed attempts with pistons left out of the six cylinder OHC engine then employed by MG. In 1939 their 1100cc engine captured a class record at over 200 mph and was given an overnight rebore in order to take the 1500cc class record as well. The 1934 746cc MG Q type produced 146 bhp which at nearly 200 bhp per litre was the highest specific output of any engine in the world at the time. Higher even than the mighty Mercedes Silver Arrows and Auto Union grand prix cars. We have two Q types in Australia both with distinguished racing records.
