The fitting of roll cages to speedway speedcars in the late 1960s was another step that involved a minimal amount of tubing but saved many lives. But, in this case, the officials tried to have it banned!! In early 1969, the McGees fitted the first roll cage in Australia to a speedcar and Ray Oram used it at Victoria's Redline Raceway and in a race in Brisbane. Incredibly, they were advised by Australian speedcar officials to remove the cage, which they did. Then, American Hank Butcher wanted to race with a cage in late 1969 and there was a big argument with local officials who again tried to ban it. But in the end sanity prevailed. Here's a pic of the McGee car. It is a very simple roll cage, comprising of about four pieces of metal, bolted to the chassis rails. Not much by today's standards but a real life saver.
