Yep DB it was a blatant and cynical effort by GM. It could be argued that in general the previous sharing in A, B and C bodies was a form of badge engineering except that each division made an effort to distinguish themselves and used their own running gear. The 1968 A bodies, for example, were all cut from the same cloth. Mercury for the most part was a Ford. How much of VW, Skoda, SEAT and Audi could be considered badge engineering?
"The '68 A bodies cut from the same cloth" No. The exterior sheet metal is different between each Chevrolet-Pontiac-Oldsmobile-Buick. Even much of the inner sheet metal is division specific. And each division still had their own V8 engines. From memory, the windscreen is the same, I'm not sure re the other glass.
