I found this photo in the Retroautos filing cabinet. It's 1963 Riv, photgraphed in May 1960, with the original La Salle badges, when Bill Mitchell thought it would be a Cadillac. When you think about it, the 1960 Chevrolet had only been on the market for 6 months and Mitchell had the shape of the '63 Riv already locked away. What is compelling for me is how quickly Bill Mitchell was able to transition GM styling from its Harley Earl-esque rounded, doughy, chrome encrusted shapes to crisp, clean lines, and at the same time, bring the American car buying public with him. I do not think that any current global boss of design, at any car company, has that level of styling leadership and influence today.
