One of the reasons I don't watch much racing these days is exactly this fact. The way the TV jumps from -place to place around the track, I often have no idea of who I am looking at. By the time I actually locate the number on the car, they jump off somewhere else. The whole thing becomes a "NOT WORTH THE EFFORT" event, & I go mow the lawn. This is made even worse when many cars are entirely different colours from behind to from the front. In the 60s we were allowed sponsors & drivers names only, & they were limited to 2 inches high. With the original Holden Dealers Team we went further than the mandatory large numbers on the side & the bonnet of the cars, we painted 2 wide GT stripes bonnet & boot in different colours for each car. You could tell from a fair distance, long before you could see numbers, which car was coming. The fixation in attracting maximum sponsor dollars, may be the thing that destroys motor racing as a spectator sport, A victim of it's own success. PS. Doesn't this photo show the way the old REAL dipper tortured the right hand front tyre wheel & suspension.
