I noticed the Vauxhall in the field in that 61 grid shot. Apparently one of those won the year before. Dad had the model after the one that won, the facelifted one. There was hardly any change; the early winning one had 3 piece rear window and indicators in the fins; Dad's was the newest one of 3 variants - one piece rear window. People always refer to them as "PA Crestas" - but that isn't really right - well - it IS right; but misleading - Cresta is a trim level - Velox was base. That is like referring to EVERY HG Holden as a "HG Premier." There were lots of FB/EK's around when I grew up - I concur about the "wrong way around" thought - the conservative FE/FC seemed more "of the time" as fins were on the way out, and by the time the FB/EK was throwing the fins around - everyone was like "Oh; ok - a small 57 chev" - so why not in 57??? We forget how low powered these cars were and so many years of "single carby simple 6's". The article about VB Cdre's and "how great" - then go on to talk about the racing/V8"s/Brock specials. Given that MOST of the cars sold are 6's - and that the biggest selling was the Holden Kingswood wagon - and then Holden brought in the Cdre - which was Torana/Cortina sized. While Holden argued it had almost as much room inside - buyers weren't impressed. Add to that the ongoing pollution control - I hired a new Cdre in 80 and was amazed at the lack of power - and how squeezy for 5 people. I thought "if this is their "new" car - we are in trouble. We hired a new XD and it was just as gutless/thirsty - but more room. Anyway - it isn't about the power or the likes I guess - it is about growing up, the cars we experienced/our family had. Love the articles. Oh, the Amals - I went to a "vintage speedway" show - a few cars there with Holden greys and Amals. There are 4 Amals in my garage - but on bikes :-) Cheers :-)
