Funnily enough, one guy recently drove from Sydney to Armidale in his EV and carried a generator with him to get around the lack of charging points. 2 hour stops required, so he was about the same travel time as Australias slowest train which comes the same way.
It is inevitable that electric vehicles will improve over time; just about everything else does. They are already at consumer level. The Tesla Model Y SUV being the worlds top selling passenger vehicle, regardless of propulsion method, for the first quarter of 2023 attests to this. Price is the limiting factor stopping total market EV dominance. The example by smackeyacky highlights the importance of charging infrastructure. I presume that it was not a Tesla with the dedicated charging network as my car would only require one 45 minute stop during which you would have a snack and freshen up, not a bad thing on a long trip. Styling wise, in my eyes the 1980s were a time of change with items such as flush glass, integrated mirrors and plastic bumpers that were part of 'whole body styling' rather than being auxiliary bits. Aerodynamic efficiency was a driving force. Since then it has been a slow evolution.
