No one emerged alive after these accidents in the 1950s and early 1960s. Apart from the bodies coming apart - the roof sheered off the upside down Customline - these cars were not able to avoid accidents as easily as today's. I might drive old cars, but it'd be a terrifying experience to have something happen. The 1800's body was one of the strongest body of any car; it's torsional rigidity was nearly twice that of its competitors, but maybe it was too strong. You want a car to fold up so you don't. Friends of mine a few years ago bought their daughter a new Daewoo (!), she totalled it crossing an intersection. Looking at the car later, they said they'd never buy another because of the way it folded up. She emerged unscathed and I told them it saved her life, as it was designed to do.
