Freeway, that's an interesting point you make about what a nightmare it was for GM-H in trying to fit different factory options to each 'personalised' car that came down the production line while keeping the lines moving at a profitable rate. It must have caused some bottlenecks - and Ford and Chrysler would have no doubt suffered similar issues. Perhaps that's why the local 'option wars' peaked around the late 1960s and early 1970s. It could also explain why the Japanese brands at that time usually came in one well-equipped specification with very few options, given they were building 'world cars' on highly efficient production lines churning out millions of units.
