Great car, Mark and worthy of consideration. One of my aunts traded her troublesome Triumph Herald in for one of the earliest fully imported Type 3s. It had beautiful woollen upholstery which looked great when new, but a few miles down the track started to look very tatty. It wasn't cheap - at £1200 it was more than an EJ Holden Special and about the same as an AP5 Valiant. A perfect smart car for a physio who made lots of house calls and it never held her up. Only two years after BMC claimed the round Australia record of 9 days in an Austin Freeway, a VW 1500 did it in just under six days, proving their reliability. Not long after that VW Australia introduced the 1500 S or Twin S - equipped with twin carbs. Was it unique to this country? Also Mark, even rarer than the van was the Convertible - apparently only a couple were produced.
