Up in Brisbane I live near the Centennial Hwy, a 2 x lane suburban Hwy running SW from the city with half a dozen exit and entry ramps and flyovers. Recently they have put LED variable speed signs all along it which change through the day depending on the traffic flow. This is the kicker. At 8am and 4pm the speed limit goes from 90Kph to 60Kph which compounds the congestion to walking speed. Lets say you need to move 100 cars a minute on a section of road at 100Kph, by slowing the speed down to 60Kph you can only move say 60 cars and as it reaches full congestion you are only move 20 cars a minute because they are at a snail pace due to the man made (or moron made) road block. The answer to move more cars surely is raise the speed limit or build more lanes on these roads. (which personally I am feed up sitting in road words around Brisbane for the last 10yrs) This daily deliberate slowing of traffic on this road drives me crazy when they possibly should be speeding it up to flow more cars. End of rave...
