Ford's Consul and Zephyr Wagons were unique to Australia in that they were designed and produced here with the roll down rear window and tail-gate rather than a sideways opening rear door as the British made them.
Those Zephyr MkII wagons were excellent cars, freeway. My dad owned a dark grey one when I was about five years old. Even though my memories of that car have faded over time, I still vividly remember sleeping on the extended load floor (rear seat folded flat) with my sister and two brothers on trips from Sydney to the NSW south coast to visit our grandparents in Tathra. Little thought was given to passenger safety in those days, so we were indeed fortunate that dad never had a crash with the four of us unrestrained, lying sprawled out under blankets and being rocked to sleep by the car's movements. Sounds crazy today, but back then lots of Aussie families travelled the same way. How did we ever survive?
