I was thinking that, if I had the money to do it, where would I like to drive each series of Thunderbird for a day. I did not get all the way with this fantasy, but here's a few for starters: 1955-57: No doubt about it, it has to be Modesto in California, to pay homage to the T-Bird that was driven by the blond woman in the movie American Grafitti. Director George Lucas grew up in Modesto and it now hosts an annual car show. 1958-1960:Beverley Hills. The square bird seems just the right sort of car to cruise past the big houses and palm tree lined streets of this rich city. I'd have Dave Brubeck's instrumental "Take Five" playing softly in the background. 1961-1963: Sydney's Northern Beaches. I'd drive from Manly to Palm Beach on a warm summer's Saturday afternoon. It would have to be an all white T-Bird. Maybe I clould find that old tape I have of legendary radio 2UW DJ Ward Austin and play it as I drove north. As Ward was famous for saying: “a rickapoodie and a fandooglie”. 1964-1966: Palm Springs: If ever a town was meant for a car and a car for a town, then the Spings and a '64-'66 T-Bird are in the top ten. The car's sharp edges are a perfect match for the sun drenched, stunning architect designed, low slung trophy homes built by the rich and famous. Frank Sinatra had his holiday house here and I'd have him on the tape deck singing "That's Life" as I cruised the wide boulevards, named after many famous folk, on my way to the Thunderbird Country Club for a 6pm martini. Dream on.....
