The Americans had a habit of introducing a new name for their top line model, and then slowly debasing the name until it became the stripped out poverty pack bottom of the line model. Chevrolet was good at this, with the glamorous Bel Air hardtop of 1950, eventually withering in 1975. Same with Impala, which we all associate with some of Chevrolet's best from 1958, only to get buried in 1985. It did get revived when they realised the image was worth saving in 1996, the same year as their top line Caprice, born in 1965, also was killed off, ending up as cabs and police cars. Chrysler did the same with the Plymouth Fury and Ford with the Galaxie names. Australian companies held on to their big names - Fairlane and Premier were never debased to poverty status; the Ghia appendage adding more glamour to the Fairlane itself.
