I must admit that I've never really gone for Raymond Loewey's designs either. The 1953 Studebaker was promoted as an American car with a European look, but while the Starliner Coupe was clean, it didn't really translate into the sedans which was their bread and butter. Because of the disappointing sales for 1953 and '54, Studebaker's management decided to pile on the chrome, which made things even worse. Compare the front of the '55 Studebaker with the two best sellers of that year, Chevrolet and Ford, which was exactly what the buying public wanted. I've never really liked the rear window treatment of the Starliner either, and nor do I like the same treatment given to the Sunbeam Rapier, which Loewey had a hand in. Having said that - I'd love a Starliner and a Rapier in my garage!
